Add a layer

Layers stack like paper: the one at the top of the list is in front. Put your background at the bottom and your green-screen actor above it.

My scenes

Build a movie one scene at a time: each scene is its own project. Export the finished scenes and join them in Edit Your Video, and score them in the Film Score Studio.

Green screen filming tips

Light the screen evenly

  • Wrinkles and shadows make patches of darker green that are hard to remove. Stretch the cloth tight.
  • Light the green screen separately from the actor, with two soft lights aimed at the screen from the sides.

Keep distance

  • Stand the actor 6–10 feet (2–3 m) in front of the screen. This stops green light bouncing onto them ("spill") and avoids shadows on the screen.

Watch the wardrobe

  • No green clothes, jewelry or props: anything green will vanish. Shiny things reflect green too.
  • Fine, fluffy hair is the hardest part to key. Light the back of the head with a "rim light" to separate it.

Match the background

  • Decide your background first, then light the actor to match it: same direction of light, same warmth (golden sunset, blue night).
  • Film with the camera at the same height and angle as the background picture.
  • Use Color match in this studio to fine-tune warmth and brightness.

Camera settings

  • Keep the camera still (use a tripod) unless you'll animate the background to match.
  • Use a fast shutter if there's movement, so edges aren't blurry. Film at the highest quality your camera or phone offers.

Keying in this studio

  • Turn on Remove green screen, then click 💧 Pick key color and click the green behind your actor.
  • Switch to Matte view: the actor should be solid white and the background solid black. Raise Amount until the background is black, and stop before holes appear in the actor.
  • Use Remove green edges for green fringes, Shrink edge for a thin outline, and Crop to cut off lights or the edge of the screen.
